NEW ENGLAND UNIT NEWS & INFORMATION

In Memoriam: Miriam Ihle, Past NEU First Lady

.
MIhle.jpgFormer NEU First Lady and long-time member Miriam (Davidson) Ihle passed away May 16, 2012 at Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport, MA. She was born on November 24, 1919 to the late William and Nina (Johnson) Davidson in Brooklyn, Iowa, where she was raised and educated, graduating from Brooklyn High School.
.
She married the late Dan Ihle on June 6, 1942 and together they raised their family in Lynn, MA. Dan and Miriam later retired to Alfred, ME before Miriam moved to Boxford, MA in 1998. Snowbirds for 20 plus years, Miriam and Dan would leave Maine for Florida and stay at the Traveler’s Rest Resort in their Airstream. They were members of the WBCCI for over 30 years, and enjoyed traveling the country in their “silver bullet”. Dan Ihle served the NEU as president in 1985, and that year they donated the call-to-order bell to the unit.

In Memoriam: Dorothy “Dot” O’Connor

.
DOConnor.jpegNEU member Dorothy S. “Dot” (Glasson) O’Connor, a resident of Melrose, passed away on Friday, October 26, 2012 at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, at the age of 84. She was the beloved wife of the late Russell A. Berg, with whom she shared 21 years of marriage, and the late Francis J. O’Connor, with whom she shared 34 years of marriage.
.
NEU Past President Carol Sterns: “Dorothy and her late husband Russell Berg were an amazing couple. This was their second marriage, as they met late in life. He had the Airstream and introduced her to the WBCCI. She took right to it and did a lot of the driving. She also wrote an occasional column for the ‘Melrose Mirror’, all the while working part time as a legal secretary which she only gave up in the last few years. You always knew that when you encountered Dorothy the art of conversation would be delightfully practiced. I spoke to her several months back. She had just moved into senior housing and was making the best of it. Dorothy’s glass was always half full. I really enjoyed Dorothy so much; she lived every inch of her life. I am missing her.”
.
NEU Past President Earl Duesel: “Dorothy was the NEU corresponding secretary under the presidency of Carol Sterns until she turned the office over to Elaine (Duesel) in September of 2003. She was also on our site committee for the 2006 Region One Rally ‘Alumination Celebration.’ Dorothy, Russ, Elaine and I and others traveled all over New England together searching out the ideal place to hold our rally. Dorothy also wrote many articles for the Quipper while Pam Bleakney was the editor.”

Member Profile: Gus Sbrogna

by Earl & Elaine Duesel

.
Gus.jpgAlthough just a young child at the time, Gus was greatly influenced by the “Roaring Twenties.” The men wore sweaters and knickers with two tone shoes and the ladies wore short hair and even shorter skirts. One can just imagine growing up in a household with nine boys and three girls as Gus did, and the many other influences Gus was exposed to. Life was grand.
.
Then one day Gus met a young lady named Vera. Head over heels he was. Gus knew, right from the start, that she was the one, and he set out to impress her. It didn’t hurt that one of his brothers was in the used car business. Off he drove one day in a slightly used Cadillac. But that alone wouldn’t do. Influenced by the jazz music of his childhood, he taught himself to play the harmonica and would serenade Vera for hours on end. You guessed it: that did the trick. Gus and Vera were married in 1956 and until Vera’s passing in January 2012, they were constantly together.

Happy 90th Birthday to Rod Dole!

.
MP900341729.jpgLong time NEU member Rod Dole recently celebrated his 90th birthday. Rod’s daughter contacted the unit this past summer to ask WBCCI and the NEU to recognize her father’s birthday. Rod’s birthday was announced at the Region One Rally in August, and a birthday card was circulated and signed by region members. The card was sent to Rod’s daughter who presented it to Rod on his birthday. Rod was thrilled to receive the card signed by old WBCCI friends! Rod was able to celebrate this milestone with his wife, Shirley, before she passed away.
.
Rod served as NEU president in 1988 and as Region One president from 1994 – 1996. Congratulations, Rod!

The Tin Chef ~ November 2012

by Katy Marler
.
chefhat-small.jpgSpecial thanks to Claire Wiklund for contributing two of her favorite recipes this month. Claire is a great chef who worked tirelessly during the 2012 Region Rally doing cooking duty. She loves to cook and it was a pleasure to work with her at the Goose Hollow rally.
.
The first recipe, Mandi’s White Chicken Chili, was one of four finalists in a contest run by Rachel Ray’s March Menu Mania. Claire uses it on the road since it can be put together at the end of the day in no time at all. The second recipe, Eton Mess, from the 1800’s, is an elegant dessert for Airstreaming!

Wanted: A Few Good People!

by J. Rick Cipot
.
neulogo-200.gifThe New England Unit of WBCCI is the largest and most active unit in Region One of our great club. There are many reasons for this; I believe that our greatest asset is the friendships we have all developed over the years. All too often I have heard members of other WBCCI units say, “I wish our unit did that.” As a unit we have an extended rally schedule, theme gatherings and a heck of a lot of fun. Since the Region One Rally there has been an increased interest in our unit and how we operate. It is very simple: we love having fun, we love great food and we love happy hours! On top of that, we have dedicated members who realize the value of being a member of the greatest RV organization in America. In a sense  we have actually created our very own extended family. We spend holidays together, travel to new places and familiar ones, and are always ready to lend a hand in good times and bad.
.
With that said, we are at a place, like so many other organizations, where we need our members’ help. As a unit we need additional members to step forward and help us continue in our success. Holding any one of our board positions is not only rewarding but a lot easier than you may think. Gail Ahmed has stepped down as our 1st VP, and with that, the WBCCI by-laws move Rich Collins, our 2nd VP, up to 1st VP. Now is the perfect time to submit your name for the opening of 2nd VP.  One thing I have learned as I have moved up through the board is that the support network within our unit is great. There is always someone ready to lend a hand. All you have to do is ask, and that is what I am doing now. I am asking for your help.
.
We have a few positions on the board and on our committee chair roster that need filling. Would you please consider stepping up and becoming a part of the team? Currently we are also working on our 2013 rally schedule and would love a few members who have not hosted a rally to please consider doing so. Many “veterans”  would be happy to co-chair with you to get you started.  No one ever knows what lies on the road ahead but I do know that as a unit we are organized, enthusiastic, and goal oriented, so let’s have fun! Please continue supporting your unit by promoting the NEU outside the unit and inside, through your enthusiasm and excitement about the NEU’s events.
